Orange Red

"Bergamot is elegant, lemon is energetic, mandarin is tangy. Orange is sunny and iconic. In the Italian town of Ivrea, not far from Turin, an orange battle is the highlight of the annual carnival celebrations. In 1801, oranges became the symbol of a military defeat when Prince Manuel Godoy y Álvarez de Faria sent a basket of these fruits to his lover, the queen, to celebrate Spain's victory over Portugal. This was avenged by oranges bearing the name of Portugal in the perfume industry for many years afterward. The oranges advertised and sold by merchants accompany the tragic end of Carmen in Bizet's opera of the same name. But my favorite story takes place at Christmas. In December, oranges are a gift of light, a message announcing the end of winter, rebellious fruits that bear the color of summer."
